STEELMASTER® BUILDINGS PROVIDES ONE-OF-A-KIND STRUCTURE FOR WW II THEMED MOVIE HOUSE

SteelMaster® Buildings, the manufacturer of high quality free span steel arch buildings, recently teamed up with The Air Zoo in Kalamazoo, Michigan, to pay tribute to World War II Airmen as well as to celebrate 100 years of flight. As one of its premier aviation attractions, the 120,000-square-foot air museum, scheduled to open May 1, 2004, will house a stateof- the-art 4D theater, using a structural concept by SteelMaster® Buildings.

Designed to look reminiscent of World War II Airmen quarters in England, the theater’s shell was constructed with two concentric arches, with one arch constructed directly over the other. With a twofoot insulated gap between structures, the theater is able to maintain a comfortable temperature as well as provide an acoustically sound environment.

“Not only were we able to provide the Air Zoo with a building that resembles Airmen quarters from the WW II era, but we were able to finish the building, which was the first of its kind, in about one month,” said Pope Woodard, a SteelMaster® Senior Design Specialist that worked on the project.

The 4-D theater, which includes a 180 degree 20 ft. x 60 ft. screen, will reach audiences never before exposed to the world of flight by offering a multi-sensory flight experience. Using 3-D film making technology with added special effects, the theater is the only one of its liking in the mid-west. Visitors can expect to travel to an airbase outside of London in 1943, where they’ll board a B-17 bomber for a mission deep in the heart of Germany and experience startling in-theater effects like shaking seats and overhead fighter planes.

“The 4-D theater and other components of the Air Zoo don’t just teach people about history, it surrounds them with it,” said Bob Ellis, Executive Director of The Air Zoo. “We couldn’t be more pleased with the theater building. It fits our ‘themed’World War II English air field perfectly.”
